Make a (Super snow) Angel this weekend!

31 Jan

It’s Super Bowl weekend! Wa-hoo! Time for beer, chicken wings, and knitting. (You think I can sit through a four-hour football game, when I don’t actually understand the rules, without knitting? NO CHANCE.) And look, I managed to find a video that encapsulates everything that this week is about: SNOW (yes, there’s more coming, Kingstonians), football, and Angel, this week’s yarn special!

Angel is a light and airy lace-weight yarn with a radiant fuzzy halo. Choose from six colours of Angel yarn (76% mohair, 24% silk) from Debbie Bliss. This week only, each ball is $7.50, no HST. (Reg. $11 ea.) Choose from: [left photo] Cream (15034; top), Raspberry (15016; middle), or Mink (15004; bottom); and [right photo] Chartreuse (15028; top), Print (15810; middle), or Teal blue (15023; bottom).

And here’s a project that’ll knit up before you can say Vince Lombardi: One ball of Angel (200m/25gr ea.), coupled with another aran or worsted yarn, will make this drapey shoulder cozy that doubles as a cowl.

Just keep knitting! Dory yarn is $4 a ball

24 Jan

Dory collageHere we are, deep in to January, and I wouldn’t blame you if the snow and cold were getting you down. My favourite chase-the-winter-blues-away trick is, you guessed it: knitting!ย  This week’s special is Dory, a cozy, single-ply, aran weight yarn that’s made in Italy. A touch of alpaca gives this yarn a subtle fuzzy halo. This yarn is discontinued so get it while you can!

This week choose from five colours of Dory yarn (51% wool, 39% acrylic, 10% alpaca) from Filtes. Each ball $4, no HST. (Reg. $7 ea.) Choose from Dark purple heather (471; bottom middle; top photo), Light purple heather (470; top left; top photo), hunter green (404; bottom left; top photo), brick red (482; top right; top photo) or navy blue (497; bottom right; top photo).

One ball (50gr/90m ea.) will make a pair of boot toppers, like the ones featured on Purlin’ J’s Ravelry project page, or how about a Marina hat, soft and slouchy, and knitted sideways?

The Fine Print: To purchase, please send an email to info@purlinjs.ca with your selection and delivery preference. I offer free delivery to within Kingston with a minimum purchase of $16, or you can pick up from downtown Kingston, or I can send via Canada Post [additional charge]. A PayPal invoice will be sent to you. No HST. While quantities last! Offer expires 30 January 2014.

“Design 101” starts 12 Jan. Register today!

6 Jan

I am teaching a design class starting this Sunday Jan 12, at Anwyn Studio (105 Mowat Ave)!

In this class, Purlin’ J’s Roving Yarn Company owner/operator Joan Sharpe, aka Purlin’ J, will help participants define their own personal design method.

Date: Sunday Jan 12 & 19
Time: 2-4 pm
Fee: $60
Participant requirements: paper scissors, glue stick, sketchbook, graph paper, pencil(s)

Experience level: “I want to create original designs and I need to release the designer within!”

This class is not about any specific knitting technique; the purpose of this class is to help novice designers unleash their own personal approach to creating original knitted designs.Through a process of free-association and experimentation, the knitter develops the confidence needed to bring his/her own interests, experience and eye to the design process. They will then map out how they might translate their ideas to knitted projects.

This unconventional approach requires the knitter to joyfully embrace failure as a natural part of the design process, knowing that through perseverance and experimentation, he/she has within the ability to create something truly original. The class is collaborative, fun and expressive!

Homework: Participants create a knitted swatch of their own design using their own stash.

For more information, or to register:
call: 613-766-1422
email: info@anwynyarn.com

About the instructor: Joan Sharpe has a fashion design diploma from Sheridan College and began her career in fashion as a hand-knit pattern designer for Sprinrite Yarns. She now operates Kingston’s only mobile yarn truck, Purlin’ J’s Roving Yarn Company.
